G2 Esports

G2 Esports Team is one of the younger—and most successful—esports organization. Founded by Carlos “ocelote” Rodríguez Santiago in 2014, it fields competitive rosters in League of Legends (LoL), Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO), Hearthstone, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG), Rocket League, Paladins, Vainglory, and Super Smash Bros.

G2 Esports in League of Legends

G2 qualified for the 2016 Spring Split after making a run through the Challenger Series. Their lineup took over Europe by winning four back-to-back EU LCS victories and establishing itself as the best team in the region. And while G2 did have a few bumps in the road, they always managed to secure a trophy.

This domestic dominance earned G2 the title of the Kings of Europe. Naturally, they were also invited to take part in Mid-Season Invitationals and LoL World Championships. But for the longest time, G2 struggled to live up to the expectations of their fan base. And even though this trend changed recently, G2 still have the hunger to prove themselves at international events.

G2 Roster

In their early days, G2 pursued an aggressive roster management policy, swapping players the moment an upgrade was available. However, they later settled down on the lineup of Expect, Trick, Perkz, Zven, and Mithy. These players stuck together through thick and thin for three splits and made a name for themselves as the best team in Europe.

That being said, this roster disbanded in 2018. With only one player remaining from the old guard, G2’s current lineup is Wunder in the top lane, Jankos in the jungle, Perkz in the mid lane, Hjärnan in the AD carry role, and Wadid in the support position. This roster shows a lot of promise, but only time will tell if it’s capable of living up to G2’s legacy.

G2 Playstyle

G2’s League of Legends playstyle puts a strong emphasis on the late game. While every player on this team can show up in the laning phase, they seem to grow stronger by the minute. And even when they’ve suffered several crushing blows, you can never count G2 out because of their dominant teamfighting and split-second decision-making.

Another strength they have is adaptability. The Kings of Europe tailor their pick/ban phase to their opponents, which makes them very deadly in a series format. Of course, this playstyle is likely to change with the introduction of the new roster, but for now, G2 are still regarded as the best late game team in Europe.

G2 Esports Team – International Results

G2’s international showings are widely criticized. They entered their first event—the 2016 MSI—as one of the few teams that could compete with the tournament favorites, SKT T1. However, a string of shaky performances led to a four-game losing streak, and G2 only managed to get fifth. The 2016 World Championship followed a similar narrative with G2 getting knocked out of the group stage with an abysmal 1-5 record.

But G2 Esports Team bounced back in 2017 by securing a second-place finish at the MSI. And while their Worlds run ended the same way as the one from the previous year, G2 still put up a fight in the strongest group of the tournament.
