EVO 2022 starts this week – Big expectations for Sony’s first outing

The biggest event in the whole of fighting games is kicking off this week. EVO 2022 is going to be the highest level of competition for all the major franchises. However, we can also expect some thrilling reveals about upcoming content for the community.

EVO has been home to some of the biggest moments in the whole of esports. Each new tournament offers a chance for more players to join that upper echelon of pros who steal the show. This year, Sony has taken over the event, and there’s a different line-up of games on offer.

EVO 2022

The EVO fighting game competition is one of the longest-running in esports. This annual competition offers brackets in a mixture of fighting games. You’ll see the biggest franchises represented as well as smaller or upcoming games.

The EVO 2022 roster includes a diverse group of titles. There are some notable omissions, but some fun games are making an appearance too. These are all of the main competitions to expect at EVO and the number of players registered to compete:

  • Guilty gear Strive – 2161 Players
  • Street Fighter V – 1320 Players
  • Tekken 7 – 1220 Players
  • King of Fighters XV – 1014 Players
  • Dragon Ball FighterZ – 636 Players
  • Granblue Fantasy Versus – 528 players
  • Mortal Kombat 11 – 464 Players
  • Melty Blood: Type Lumina – 411 Players
  • Skullgirls 2nd Encore – 295 Players

Each of these has its own tournament with a prize pool to offer the top players. However, it isn’t just the major games that get representation here. You’re also going to see smaller tournaments and side events across the arena.

Who is Competing at EVO 2022?

In terms of who is playing, there’s more than you can list between all of the games attending. Individual games like Guilty Gear have more than 2,161 players coming.

Major players such as SonicFox, Punk, JWong, and GO1 will be in competition. Some of these like SonicFox and JWong will be competing across multiple games, proving their strength in the whole genre not just one title.

MultiVersus

One of the biggest pulls at EVO is going to be MultiVersus. The game has only just launched, yet Multiversus its breaking records for fighting games, and pulling in all of the big streamers.  This is going to be a side event held by Warner Brothers during the event. It’ll be in 2-v-2 format with a total prize pool of $100,000.

EVO 2022 Announcements

EVO 2022 isn’t just going to be a fighting game tournament; it’s got some news for some of the most anticipated titles.

King of Fighters was going to have a new gameplay trailer at the tournament, likely for Team Awakened Orochi. However, they then dropped the trailer early instead. They might still have something new to show off at the actual event though.

A big omission is going to be Mortal Kombat. A developer from the game specifically took to Twitter to shut down speculation about a potential trailer or news drop!

Capcom might well be revealing a little more from Street Fighter VI. This game has been showcased at lot of events recently, including a Street Fighter 6 playable demo at Comic Con. They’ve been drip feeding news gradually. EVO 2022 looks like the perfect settings to see a bit more about the next big thing in fighters.
